Seems we’re weathering a storm of popular, snarky Florida authors this last couple weeks. First it was Tim Dorsey’s continuing book tour, and now a visit from Carl Hiaasen, whose newest young adult novel “Chomp” comes out in March. His appearance kicks off this year’s Winter with the Writers series at Rollins College tomorrow (Feb. 2) with a master class at 4 p.m. and readings at 7:30 p.m. in the Bush auditorium on campus.

It might be winter, but they’re burning through writers over at the Kerouac House. Seems like yesterday they welcomed their latest resident Bernadette Esposito, and it’s already time for a goodbye from the teacher and essayist. Hear parts of her new work about plane crashes at her farewell reading at 8 p.m. this Saturday (Feb. 4) at the Kerouac House on 1418 Clouser Avenue in College Park. Admission is free.

NaNoWriMo? Decent idea, silly abbreviation. Please, no one invent a similar one for Mary Robinette Kowal’s A Month of Letters challenge, which kicks off today. The idea is simple, and willfully throwback: Send 24 pieces of snail-mail correspondence throughout the month of February, whether they be postcards, clippings, or full-blown letters. I’ve participated in a
Article source: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/services/os-books-roundup-2-1-12-20120201,0,6624740.story

Yeah, let me spell that one out for you: National Blog Posting Month. You might already be familiar with NaNoWriMo, or “National Novel Writing Month”, which takes place in November. Nablopomo (oh, forget the capital letters) is a bit different in that it takes place every month, and the good folks over at BlogHer pick a monthly theme. (This month’s theme? “Relative”.)

And you participate whichever month you’d like.

And, for some reason, I committed to February. I committed to write one blog post EVERY SINGLE DAY for an entire month.

At least it’s February — only 28 days, right?

Oh, wait. Outstanding. This is a leap year. Make that 29.

Anyway, the whole point of the project is to stretch your brain and your writing and your fingers in brand new ways. Melissa Ford describes it eloquently:

It’s that time again; time to commit to posting every day for a full month by joining in with NaBloPoMo. The point? Well, beyond the endurance factor — of becoming a writing athlete —
Article source: http://blogs.psychcentral.com/panic/2012/02/will-writing-daily-blog-posts-help-to-kick-my-perfectionism/

Dear Aspiring,

Up until a couple of years ago, your best option may have involved setting up a MySpace profile and throwing some music on. Nowadays, you have a couple of great options to choose from. Over the years I have tried every store and distribution service I’ve come across as both a listener and an amateur musician. It’s not hard to skip the record labels and sell and distribute music on your own. Let’s start by taking a look at how you can skip the labels and get your music online before we move onto making sure music-lovers can find it easily.

How To Release Your Music Online

You have three different choices for charging for your music: free, pay-what-you-want and a set price. Each has their own advantages and different services that work better. Knowing that, let’s break down the best places to upload
Article source: http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/01/ask-lh-how-can-i-release-my-music-online-so-people-can-easily-find-it/

I’m pretty pumped about it!

You see, a year ago, I was basically stuck. My last full-time teaching position had ended in 2009, and with education being in the state it’s in, I knew it was going to be difficult to find another one — especially because I’m certified in English (like a million other people). I wasn’t completely sure that I even wanted to teach anymore in current conditions, but I just wasn’t sure what I did want to do. I was growing tired of sitting idle in my parents’ house. Most of my time and energy had been going into working on my second NaNoWriMo novel, but by mid-January, even that was coming to a standstill.

One day I was browsing through job listings on Craigslist, looking for anything in the Philadelphia area that I might be able to do. My search was pretty un-targeted. Why Philadelphia? My neck of the Central Pennsylvanian woods isn’t really booming with jobs. I have friends and family in the Philly area and like it there.
Article source: http://www.business2community.com/blogging/celebrating-my-one-year-blogoversary-with-business-2-community-0124663

Last night, I was up until 1AM inserting HTML italics tags into a Notepad document as part of the finishing touches on my book, The Definity. In the publishing world, I would’ve simply handed my manuscript off to someone else and let some creative director deal with all the nitty-gritty details in regards to book covers and eBook versions of my story and I could rest at night on the piles of money that the publisher gave me. Instead, I was painstakingly searching line by line making sure that the book’s format wouldn’t “break” when someone loaded it up on their Kindle. From the cover (our artist Cody actually did all the characters and main artwork while I did layout) to design, publication, and promotion, it was a challenge to assemble this book over the past 15 months while working a full-time job and writing for the best web site in the world.

Mary Robinette Kowal sez, “I have a challenge for you. When was the last time you got a letter in the mail? December sees a lot of mail and you remember that sense of delight when the first card arrives. You can have that more often. That’s what sparked The Month of Letters Challenge The rules are simple. 1. In the month of February, mail at least one item through the post every day it runs. Write a postcard, a letter, send a picture, or a cutting from a newspaper, or a fabric swatch. 2. Write back to everyone who writes to you. This can count as one of your mailed items. If you are in the US all you are committing to is to mail 24 items. Why 24? There are four Sundays and one US holiday. In fact, you might send more than 24 items. You might develop a correspondence that extends beyond the month. You might enjoy
Article source: http://boingboing.net/2012/01/24/mary-robinette-kowal-challenge.html

● Location(s): Starbucks at Exit 10 of Seomyeon Station, Busan at 6 p.m. every Sunday

● Number of members: It varies. Some days there are around 10 people; other days just two. It really depends on holidays. If we know beforehand that not enough people will come, we will cancel for the next week.

Who is it for? Everyone who likes to write, is open to new ideas and ways of thinking, and people who are interested in an outlet for their creativity. We have many different writers with different styles (such as essays, short stories, poetry, etc.), and also different genres (horror, sci-fi, erotica, real life, and so on). You do not have to be a professional writer to join. We have members who are published and others who just started to write. It is a great way to meet new people in Busan or neighboring cities.

The circus appears at night, without warning. From sunset to sunrise, the ethereal Cirque des Rêves is a circus like no other. Visitors to this 19th-century magical traveling circus amble the colorful lanes between rows and rows of black-and-white tents, each of which contains a marvelously imaginative wonder: a contortionist who folds herself into a tiny glass box, a garden of ice, magicians facing off in surreal duels.

This is The Night Circus, the debut novel by Erin Morgenstern, who will read from and sign her book in Lexington and Northern Kentucky this week.

Published late last year by Doubleday, The Night Circus is aiming to be the next fantasy novel to sweep readers off their feet a la Harry Potter or Twilight. Since its release, the book has received a wide and popular reception, with fans showing up to book signings in the circus’ signature colors — black, white and red — or dressed as circus performers.
Article source: http://www.kentucky.com/2012/01/22/2038319/best-selling-fantasy-novel-was.html
